Espetáculo Fantástico - PT 2

2024

Softcover, staplebound, 2-color Risograph booklet. Edition of 40

"Espetáculo Fantástico" is a text-based iteration of a film essay with the same title, dissecting how time travel narratives in television and film can serve as metaphors for diasporic identity formation in the United States.

Presented as a series of vignettes, the artist merges pop cultural analysis with personal stories, ranging from early childhood memories watching Anglo-centric science fiction plotlines to family histories of unearthed ancestral memory and intergenerational migration. By balancing the tones of humor and grief, the film grapples with the image of a time traveler lost in plain sight. Intangible "technologies" are transferred through intergenerational memory and the mending of ancestral disconnect, providing alternate windows through which viewers can reimagine these dominant narratives.

This booklet was printed at Lucky Risograph in New York.

This writing evolved from a short-form essay (formerly titled "Out of Time / Out of Place") that was published in the Digimyths Reader in 2021 by Kevin Cadena.

The text was then adapted into a performance lecture which was presented at the Queens Museum in 2022 before reaching its current phase as a time-based research series. The lecture was part of a panel titled "New Devices of Dissemination".
